It can be hung on the wall and simply plugged in, or if a round wall box is available, it can be permanently hard wired and operated with a wall switch. The thick milk glass shade ensures that the lamp emits a really discreet, amber-white light. If temporarily more light is desired, the outer shade can be removed and the lamp can be used with the clear glass chimney as well.
